Founded in Portland more than 10 years ago, Nau knows a thing or two about thriving in cold, rainy weather. Its beliefs stem from creating better products using high-quality materials, like 100 percent organic cotton, recycled down, hemp, responsibly sourced wool, and more.

The Company’s Sustainability Mission:

“As the first sustainable performance wear brand, the fabrics and processes we needed largely didn’t exist. So we had to create them.

We launched the first collections of waxed organic cotton and winter coats made of 100% recycled down. We even invented our own textile treatment — PFC-free DWR.

To make the world more sustainable, we’re ready to do some of the heavy lifting.

From the start, our design team banned a “Restricted Substances” list, established a code of conduct, and relied heavily on third-party audits.

After a decade in business, we have refined our list to only use the same 10 sustainable textiles for everything we make. (That is, until we invent the next great thing.)

To be truly sustainable, our clothing can’t just be sustainably sourced. It has to be sustainably designed.

We design our clothes to last a lifetime.

From the high-tech performance to the timeless style — you’ll never get sick of your best pieces. And they’ll last in your wardrobe for years on end.

We’re proud of our work building the world’s most sustainable performance wear brand.

But Nau’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond just clothing.

We believe the road to a sustainable world is paved with many congruent solutions — better businesses, better policies, and disruptive charities.

That’s why we donate 2% of every dollar you spend directly to grassroots environmentalist causes.

So every purchase you make at Nau supports sustainability. On every level.”

Founded by iconic surfer Kelly Slater and designer John Moore. Using eco-friendly practices and sustainably sourced materials—like recycled fishing nets and organic cotton—this brand carefully crafts adult clothing, including outerwear.

The Company’s Sustainability Mission:

“With the challenge from Kelly, Outerknown was created, and we started our journey. When we began, our own friends and trusted peers from the clothing industry doubted us. They said consumers didn’t care enough about sustainable style to pay more. It was also challenging to find factories and material suppliers willing to go through the extra steps we required as a startup. We built an entire collection that never saw the light of day because it couldn’t deliver on our vision, but we continued to persevere until we found the right partners who believed in our mission and could deliver on our strict sustainability standards. It’s been five years since we sold our first item of clothing, and we couldn’t be more proud of what we have built and accomplished. We haven’t figured it all out, but we continue to learn every day. We’re quite proud that we’ve pioneered many new ideas at Outerknown while raising the standard for sustainable design in our industry and beyond. We look at our sustainability commitment like the North Star. We will never actually get there, but the North Star is always reminding us what direction we should be going. Our commitment as a brand is to keep learning, exploring, and innovating. With every decision we make, we will always choose the most responsible path.”

3. Sézane

Based In | Paris, France

Ethics | Natural & sustainable materials, ethical production, powered by renewable energy, gives back

Best For | Classic silhouettes

Product Range | Jackets, coats, trenches

Size Range | XS–XXL; up to US 14

Price Range | $145–$500

The idea behind Sézane is to create “perfectly-cut pieces that can be worn forever.” By working with its long-standing partner ateliers in India, Portugal, Italy, and more, Sézane can promise expert hand-embroidery, silk production, and quality leather across its pieces.

The Company’s Sustainability Mission:

“You could say that an organisation resembles those who create it: its teams, clients and founders. Today, Sézane reflects the brand we set out to be more than ever because we are now officially B Corp certified.

But what does this mean? It means that Sézane is a little closer to becoming the brand we desire to be at our essence. From the choice of production methods, raw materials and working conditions, to our environmental footprint and engagement in the community, B-Corp is the stringent, independent validation of what we stand for.
Guided by a desire to create timeless pieces that respect the plant and its people, ¾ of the materials in our current collections are eco-friendly. Plus, our pieces are certified by 5 of the industries most reliable certifications: GOTS, Oeko-Tex, FSC, RWS and RMS. Since 2018, Sézane has also raised over 4.5 million euros for the philanthropic program DEMAIN. On the 21st of every month, 10% of our global sales and 100% of the proceeds from a dedicated design are donated to programs that support access to education and equal opportunities for children all over the world.

So much has been achieved so far, but I know we can go even further in the future. This is just the beginning.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for joining us on this adventure and helping us write the story of Sézane.”
